Low-cost ultra-miniature 3-axis AMR magnetic sensor with a wide measuring range

2021-02-11

The MMC5603NJ from MEMSIC is a cost-effective AMR (Anisotropic Magneto Resistive) magnetic sensor intended  for measuring magnetic field along three axes.

The measuring range of ±30 Gauss (20 bits) is the widest range  among all AMR sensors offered by MEMSIC. The MMC5883MA comes with a built-in temperature sensor as well as signal  processing circuits, eliminating the need for additional units such as an A/D converter or timer.

With resolution of 0.0625mG / LSB @ 20-bit and noise level of 2mG RMS it is possible to achieve heading accuracy  of ±1º in electronic compass applications. The MMC5883MA features a Power Down mode with a current consumption of 1 μA, making the sensor suitable for use in numerous portable battery-powered applications.  It communicates with external devices via I2C or I3C interface.

The sensor is encapsulated in an ultra-miniature package with a size of 0.8×0.8×0.4mm. It operates from a supply voltage  range of 1.62 to 3.6 V and in the industrial temperature range.

Application examples:

  • electronic compass & navigation systems
  • game consoles
  • industrial devices requiring position sensing
  • portable devices - smartphones, watches, etc.
