Switched-mode power supplies (SMPS) for LED lights are modern electronic devices that convert electrical energy more efficiently than traditional linear power supplies. Instead of using a transformer operating at a low mains frequency (50/60 Hz), SMPS operate at much higher frequencies, which allows for the reduction in size and weight of components like transformers and capacitors.

Operation of LED Switching Power Supplies:

  • Rectification and Filtering of Input Voltage: The power supply receives alternating current (AC) from the power grid, which is first rectified to direct current (DC) using a rectifier.
  • Voltage Conversion: After obtaining DC voltage, it is converted into a high-frequency pulse signal using a transistor operating in a switching mode (on/off). The switching frequency can range from several tens of kilohertz to even a few megahertz.
  • Voltage Transformation: The high-frequency signal is sent to a pulse transformer, which changes its voltage level to that required by the load (e.g., 5V, 12V, 24V).
  • Rectification and Filtering of Output Voltage: In the second rectification stage, the output voltage is smoothed using capacitors to obtain stable DC voltage.

Advantages of SMPS for LEDs:

  • High Efficiency: Due to the high-frequency operation and appropriate transistor switching, SMPS achieve energy efficiency of 80-95%, resulting in less energy loss in the form of heat.
  • Compact Size: Smaller transformers and other components allow for the construction of power supplies that are significantly smaller and lighter than linear power supplies.
  • Reduced Electromagnetic Interference (EMI): Thanks to high-frequency operation, SMPS generate fewer disturbances in the mains frequency band, although additional EMI filters may be needed to limit interference in other bands.

SMPS for LEDs are specialized devices that provide the correct voltage and current to light-emitting diodes (LEDs), ensuring their proper operation. Since LEDs are sensitive to voltage and current changes, the right power supply is crucial for their longevity, performance, and safety.

Applications of SMPS for LEDs:

  • Home Lighting: LED power supplies are commonly used in homes to power LED strips, spotlights, LED bulbs, and other lighting systems.
  • Commercial Lighting: In offices, shops, hotels, and restaurants, LED power supplies provide adequate power for lighting systems, often with dimming functions.
  • Industrial Lighting: In production halls, warehouses, and other industrial facilities, LED power supplies support efficient and durable lighting.
  • Outdoor Lighting: In applications such as street lighting, garden lighting, and facade lighting, LED power supplies are weather-resistant and ensure reliable operation.

SMPS are essential for providing safe, efficient, and long-lasting operation of lighting systems based on LED technology.

DIN Rail-mounted SMPS are specialized devices that provide stable voltage and current for various industrial and automation applications, mounted in standard control cabinets and distribution boards. This type of power supply uses switching technology to manage energy efficiently.

Operation of DIN Rail Switching Power Supplies:

  • Power Input: It accepts AC voltage from the electrical grid, typically ranging from 100V to 240V AC, making it suitable for a wide range of input voltages.
  • Voltage Rectification: The AC voltage is first rectified to DC using a rectifier, removing voltage variability and converting it into a unidirectional DC current.
  • Filtering: After rectification, filters (usually capacitors) are used to smooth out ripples and noise that may occur in the DC voltage, ensuring its stability.
  • Output Voltage Regulation: In SMPS, the output voltage is stabilized by control circuits that monitor the voltage and adjust the switching transistor's operation to maintain a constant voltage, regardless of load or input voltage changes.
  • Safety and Protection:
  1. Overload Protection: Automatically cuts off the power supply in case of excessive load.
  2. Short Circuit Protection: Prevents damage in case of a short circuit in the circuit.
  3. Thermal Protection: Shuts down or reduces power supply performance in case of overheating.
  4. Overvoltage Protection: Protects against sudden voltage spikes that could damage the power supply and connected devices.
  • DIN Rail Mounting: The power supply is mounted on a standard DIN rail, ensuring easy installation and integration in control cabinets and distribution boards. The DIN rail mounting system allows for quick installation and removal, which is convenient for maintenance and equipment replacement.

Characteristics of DIN Rail-mounted SMPS:

  • Compact Size: Due to their small size, DIN rail-mounted power supplies are easy to install in control cabinets and distribution boards, where space is often limited.
  • Lightweight: These devices are lightweight, making them easy to transport and install. The low weight also reduces mechanical stress on the DIN rail.
  • Various Output Voltages: These power supplies are available in different versions, providing stable output voltages such as 5V, 12V, or 24V, which are typical for industrial and automation devices.
  • Energy Efficiency: Modern DIN rail-mounted power supplies are highly energy-efficient, leading to less energy loss and reduced heating of the devices.
  • Protection and Safety: They are equipped with various protections, such as overload, short circuit, overvoltage, and thermal protection. This ensures long-lasting and safe operation even in challenging conditions.
  • Easy Installation and Maintenance: The DIN rail installation is quick and simple, and possible replacements or maintenance of devices are convenient due to the standardization of the mounting system.

Applications:

  • Industrial Automation: They power various devices, from PLC controllers to sensors and actuators.
  • Telecommunications: Used in telecommunications systems to power transmission equipment.
  • Building Management Systems (BMS): Power sensors, cameras, and networking devices in building management systems.
  • Energy Sector: In transformer stations and other energy installations where reliability and stability of power supply are needed.

DIN Rail-mounted SMPS are key components in modern industrial and automation installations, offering a reliable, efficient, and easy-to-install power solution.
