PCF8576CT is a universal, single-chip LCD controller. It features a circuit for generating the power voltages for LCD matrices and includes a 40x4-bit RAM containing data to be displayed.
It supports driving 40 display segments and 4 backplane electrodes. The device can operate in either static or multiplexed mode. In static mode, using 1 BP signal, it is possible to drive a total of 40 segments - 40 characters in a dot matrix, 5 characters in a 7-segment display, or 2 characters in a 14-segment display. In multiplexed mode, using all 4 BP signals, it can drive a total of 4*40 = 160 segments - 160 characters in a dot matrix, 20 characters in a 7-segment display, or 10 characters in a 14-segment display.
The device can be powered with a voltage ranging from 2 to 6V. It features low power consumption and does not require external components for proper operation. The device is controlled and configured via an I2C interface operating at a frequency of 200kHz. For controlling a larger number of segments (up to 2560), cascading of devices is possible.
