Microchip 8-bit microcontrollers with a RISC architecture are characterized by high power efficiency of I/O pins, low power consumption, and an integrated Watchdog with a power-on reset function. They have two separate internal buses: address and data; and use pipelined processing. All registers, including I/O ports, timers, and instruction counters, can have their contents modified in a single operation. All instructions require only one cycle (200 ns at 20MHz), except for jump instructions, which need 2 cycles. Available in 6-, 8-, 14-, 18-, 20-, 28-, 40-, 44-, 64-, and 80-pin packages, with Flash program memory or OTP, non-volatile EEPROM data, and operational RAM. I/O pins are suitable for a wide range of applications, from simple projects to highly complex "high-performance" systems. ISP allows most devices to be programmed directly in the system.
