Surge Protectors

What is a Surge Protector?
It is worth starting with the fact that surge protectors are referred to by many different names. Sometimes the abbreviated term – surge protector is used. Other times, they are called lightning arresters or surge limiters. Ultimately, they are always devices whose purpose is to prevent the occurrence of a surge or at least mitigate its negative effects by limiting the frequency and duration of the so-called follow-up current.
Types of Surge Protectors
In our offer, you will find various surge protectors. We have components from three main categories, namely:
- disconnection,
- limiting,
- combined.
A disconnection surge protector is a device equipped with a spark gap, which is its basic component. This equipment shorts the terminals, allowing current to flow when a specified voltage value is exceeded. When the voltage remains within the norm, these surge protectors do not conduct electricity.
Limiting models work with varistors. These devices absorb the impulse energy, leading to the disconnection of electrical equipment when the permissible voltage limit is exceeded.
On the other hand, combined surge protectors are devices that combine the features of disconnection and limiting models. They are characterized by no current flow when the voltage is within the norm and the fact that they completely eliminate follow-up current.
How to Connect Surge Protectors?
You might be wondering how to connect surge protectors? As you browse our range, you will notice how diverse the models of surge protectors are. This means that the answer to the installation question is not straightforward. However, in every case, it is worth remembering some basic principles.
First and foremost, remember that surge protectors are installed in the main distribution board. This is where the main grounding rail is located. Additionally, surge protectors can be easily inspected when installed in the distribution board. An alternative is to install the device on a cable junction. However, this solution is not recommended due to the lower effectiveness of the protector in such a location.
When installing a surge protector, remember its proper placement in the distribution board. It is recommended to place it second, immediately after the main switch. Next, install the phase failure detector, followed by differential and overload protections.
