What are RS485/422 Interface circuits?

Generally speaking, interface circuits are unique integrated circuits which allow the communication between devices, and RS485/422 is one of these. It is not a new generation technology, however, it is still one of the most commonly used interface circuits. Range of applications of this particular IC is very vast. It is worth explaining how RS485/422 circuits are constructed.

Namely, the RS485/422 interface is a transmitting-receiving circuit. As it was mentioned, it is a kind of integrated circuit. We distinguish hybrid and monolithic integrated circuits, and RS485 belongs to the latter category. Its key element is a monolithic crystal. Transmission in RS485/422 interface circuit is carried out bilaterally, through a twisted pair wire. Transmitter has a single input and many outputs. Likewise, in a receiver, we will find only one output and many inputs.

How does the RS485/422 work?

Nowadays, RS485/422 interface circuits are widely used in numerous industrial branches, as well as in everyday life. Everything thanks to its huge capabilities. The key factor is an ability to transfer data bilaterally. If that is not enough, it may occur both in half duplex and full duplex modes. In half duplex mode, the data transfer may take place only unilaterally in a given moment. However, upon the transfer termination, it is possible to send the signal the other way. A common application of the RS485/422 interface circuit with this mode is walkie-talkie. Meanwhile, RS485 full duplex allows data to be transferred in both ways. This kind of RS485/422 interface circuits are used for instance in phones. This type of transmission is possible thanks to the three-state outputs used in RS485. It is also worth mentioning that in these devices, every point can drive the line, which significantly increases their functionality

RS485 advantages

New protocols and circuits are created constantly. It may seem that such a classic solution like RS485 will be forgotten, however that is not the case. Popularity of this circuit is unchangeably very high. This results from the various advantages that this circuit is distinguished by. RS485 full duplex mode mentioned above is one of them, in which data is transferred both ways at the same time. However RS485/422 circuits are also distinguished by:

  • Efficient communication
  • Broad application
  • Interference resistance
  • Electrostatic discharge immunity
  • Overvoltage immunity
  • Data transfer speed
  • Ability to transfer data over long distances
  • Bilateral transmission with the use of only one wire
  • Ability to connect numerous transmitters and receivers

From among all the advantages mentioned above, it is worth taking a closer look at the broad application factor of the RS485/422 interface circuits. As mentioned, RS485 is widely used in many industrial branches. It is used in industrial vehicles management, but also finds its place in modern devices used in business and everyday life. One of the fields of application for this kind of integrated circuits is the medical industry.

It is also worth pointing out the fact that RS485/422 is resistant to every interference and other effects that may disturb the operation of this device. This resistance is accompanied by effective performance, due to high data transfer over long distances, in both ways. Whatsmore, RS485/422 interface circuits can support numerous transmitters and receivers, whose number is only limited by energy demand. All this makes the RS485/422 interface circuits, in many cases, irreplaceable. And probably they will stay like this for a long time
