Peltier Cell
Professional work in electricity requires knowledge of various phenomena and laws related to physics. One of the effects well-known to every specialist is undoubtedly the so-called Peltier effect, which allows for heat transfer. Peltier cells, also known as Peltier modules, are semiconductor thermoelectric elements. What can they be used for, and what are their characteristics? It’s worth delving into this topic to understand their advantages and applications.
Peltier Cell - Construction
Regarding Peltier cells, their efficiency and performance largely stem from their construction. Essentially, the cells consist of two ceramic plates arranged parallel to each other. Between these plates are semiconductors of type “p” and type “n,” arranged alternately. The semiconductors in Peltier cells are usually made from doped bismuth telluride. They are connected in series using copper plates.
Effective Cooling - Peltier Cell - Operating Principle
Many devices require cooling to operate correctly and efficiently. In some cases, elements without moving parts or working fluids need to be chosen. Peltier cells are characterized by high mechanical durability, the ability to operate regardless of position, a rigid structure, as well as high longevity and lack of refrigerant. Additionally, high-power Peltier cells are available on the market, allowing for very effective cooling.
Regarding their operation, as mentioned, the semiconductors are arranged alternately between two ceramic plates. Type “p” semiconductors have a deficit of electrons, while type “n” semiconductors have an excess of electrons. When current flows through the cell, electrons begin to move. This movement results in the absorption of heat from one side of the module and its release on the other. As you can see, the principle of operation of Peltier cells is not particularly complex.
Advantages of Peltier Cells and Possible Applications
Peltier cells have relatively broad usage possibilities. The first association might be camping refrigerators where these modules are used. However, this is not all. Peltier cells can be connected together to create a small element capable of reliably and efficiently cooling various electronic components and devices. In terms of Peltier cells, efficiency is a parameter that can be relatively easily adjusted by connecting individual elements. In addition to efficiency, connecting several modules can also change the power of the cells.
What about the efficiency of Peltier cells? It turns out that efficiency can exceed 100%! This happens when more thermal energy is obtained than electrical energy supplied. Returning to applications - Peltier cells are valuable for installations requiring precise maintenance of a constant temperature, along with the ability to regulate the heat in the system. One important consideration when using modules made from several cells is that the “hot side,” which releases heat, will have a very high temperature.
