Thyristors as Essential Components in Numerous Installations

Anyone involved in electronics will eventually come into contact with thyristors. What are these small components and what is their purpose? To explain what thyristors are used for, it is essential to discuss current flow and control. Thyristors are very small but indispensable components in many electrical systems.

What Types of Thyristors Are There?

Before explaining how thyristors work and their function, let's briefly discuss the types of thyristors available on the market. In our store, you can find, among other things, a unidirectional triode thyristor, which plays a significant role in manually triggered thyristor applications. Another model is the gate-controlled triode thyristor, also known as a triac. This type of thyristor is a four-layer structure, similar to a standard thyristor. Our offer also includes, among others:

  • tetrode photothyristors,
  • bidirectional triode thyristors, also known as triacs, which are three-electrode semiconductor elements triggered by a gate signal,
  • unidirectional diode thyristors (dynistors),
  • and many other types of thyristors.

What Exactly Are Thyristors?

Thyristors are among the most commonly used semiconductor components. They are also called controlled semiconductor diodes. How does thyristor control work and how does this small component function? An external voltage applied between the cathode and anode polarizes the junctions in opposite directions. If the anode has a negative potential relative to the cathode, the junction is reverse-biased. A small reverse current flows in the circuit established by the cathode and anode, with a magnitude of a few microamperes. Thyristors can operate like a standard reverse-biased diode. To do this, the external voltage must be increased until breakdown occurs. This allows the thyristor to enter a reverse or valve state.

Thyristors can be switched, changing their state from blocking to conducting when certain values of anode voltage and current are exceeded. The function of a specific thyristor depends on its type. For example, bidirectional thyristors are used to simplify power control in AC circuits. Although it is also the case that DC power, which also requires controllers, is controlled using thyristors.

Thyristors - A Wide Range of Devices with Varied Parameters

The thyristors available in our store have a variety of parameters. One of these parameters is thermal performance. These are characteristic values resulting from the temperature range within which these small devices can operate. Additionally, power thyristors generate heat due to power dissipation, which also needs to be considered. There are also dynamic parameters, including switching time, turn-off time, and critical rate at which blocking voltage rises. The electronic components available in our store are characterized by high quality and a range of parameters. This makes it easy to select thyristors to meet your needs. We offer thyristors suitable for various circuits, capable of handling both DC and AC. If you have any doubts about choosing the right device, we encourage you to get in touch.
