Phototransistors - semiconductors
Phototransistors are three-layer semiconductors consisting of:
- Emitter
- Base
- Collector
In a phototransistor, the emitter is connected to base as well as collector. A current is produced in each of these connections. In the emitter-base connection the current is higher, and in the emitter-collector lower. Current produced between emitter and base controls the current between emitter and collector. Phenomenon occurring between emitter and base controls the current between emitter and collector. However, it is not happening by producing current but by light volume. In other words, current flow in the emitter-collector connection is dependent on the volume of light that falls onto the emitter-base connection.
What is a phototransistor then?
Based on the facts mentioned above, we can state that a phototransistor is a three layered semiconductor reacting to the light volume.
Phototransistors are described as infrared elements, thus often a name infrared phototransistor can be stumbled upon. It is worth taking a closer look at what this name means. Phototransistors are semiconductors, so somewhat they serve as connectors. However, a phototransistor works as a connector, a conductor to be precise, only during a reaction to infrared waves, otherwise it remains inactive. It is worth mentioning that infrared elements are not so obvious in their operation. That is, they react not only to the presence or absence of the light, but rather to its volume.
Infrared elements and their usage
When it comes to a classic transistor, it is used mainly for amplifying the current or also as a switch. Phototransistors on the other hand have many applications.
