Schottky Diode – Fast, Low-Voltage, Irreplaceable. Just What You Need
In a world where every nanosecond and every fraction of a volt counts, Schottky diodes are second to none. Whether you're building switching power supplies, designing high-frequency circuits, or creating energy-efficient electronics, you can't afford to ignore them. As an experienced distributor of electronic components, MICROS offers a wide selection of Schottky diodes that perform where efficiency, precision, and reliability matter the most.
How Does a Schottky Diode Work?
A Schottky diode does not use the typical p-n junction – its secret lies in the metal-semiconductor (m-s) junction. The metal side of the junction forms the anode electrode, and the semiconductor side is the cathode. The maximum voltage drop of a Schottky diode in the forward direction is from 0.2 to 0.5 V, depending on the forward current and diode type. Current flows through majority carriers, which significantly reduces switching time and limits charge accumulation. The result? Outstandingly low inertia and the ability to operate in high-frequency circuits. And the voltage drop? In the range of 0.2–0.4 V – that's half of what conventional silicon diodes offer.
Schottky diodes have a limited peak reverse voltage rating compared to silicon junction diodes. This usually limits their application to low-voltage switching power supplies.
Advantages and Disadvantages of Schottky Diodes
Advantages of Schottky Diodes
- High switching speed - the time it takes for the diode to switch from ON (conducting) to OFF (non-conducting).
- High current density (a small voltage is enough to produce a large current).
- Low forward voltage drop or low turn-on voltage (less voltage is needed to generate current flow).
- Low junction capacitance.
- High efficiency.
- Suitable for high frequencies (e.g., for RF applications).
- Less noise - Schottky diodes generate less unwanted noise than traditional diodes.
Disadvantages of Schottky Diodes
- High reverse saturation current - Schottky diodes generate a higher reverse saturation current than PN diodes.
How to Test a Schottky Diode?
Set your multimeter to diode test. Attach the probes – red to the anode, black to the cathode. If you see a value around 0.2–0.4 V, everything is fine. In the opposite direction – no conduction (or a very high value). Simple? Of course. But this simplicity results from the exceptionally advanced semiconductor physics of the diode.
What is the Voltage Drop Across a Schottky Diode?
No need to delve into academic charts – just look at the datasheets. Typical values: from 0.15 V to 0.45 V. That's really low, and the difference compared to a conventional rectifier diode (about 0.7 V) is huge – lower power loss, less heat, greater efficiency. All that gain for such a small component? Exactly!
Typical Applications of Schottky Diodes
Schottky diodes are widely used in many electronic products. Their unique properties and advantages over other diodes make them suitable for:
- RF circuits,
- as power rectifiers,
- various power supplies,
- solar panel systems to protect against reverse battery charging,
- and many others...
Schottky Diodes at MICROS – Probably the Best Choice
Schottky diodes offered by MICROS are components from renowned manufacturers, available in a variety of versions – from classic THT to SMD, and even advanced models for extreme conditions. Whether you're designing converters, mixers, or need a low-voltage rectifier – you'll find exactly what you need here.
Value your time, appreciate precision, and prefer reliable solutions? You've come to the right place. Because here, technology makes sense. And the Schottky diode? It's not just a component – it's the key to more efficient electronics!
The offer includes Schottky diodes, including those from FAIRCHILD.
Features of the diodes:
- ultra-low forward voltage drop,
- very low profile – 1.1 mm,
- use of Trench technology,
- compliant with the RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU.
