In contemporary electronics, programmable digital circuits play a crucial role. These are often referred to as programmable logic devices or simply FPLDs (Field Programmable Logic Devices). This term refers to any digital integrated circuit whose functional properties can be defined by the end user. For instance, this may involve implementing a previously designed specialized digital circuit within the FPLD structure.
A programmable digital circuit comes with a pre-defined array of digital elements that allow the user to define their operation and interconnection after leaving the factory.
There are two main types of programmable logic devices. These digital circuit designations are:
- CPLD (Complex Programmable Logic Device),
- FPGA (Field Programmable Gate Array).
