How a photodiode is built - what does such a component look like?

Photodiodes in their build resemble regular

silicon diodes. They have a flat or convex lens inside which allows it to illuminate one of the circuit's areas. During a regular operation, photodiodes are reverse biased. When it comes to current-voltage characteristics of a photodiode, it is similar to the characteristic of a regular diode. The main difference is the fact that when there is no illumination, a low dark current will be flowing. However after the illumination, an additional  photoelectric current will be present. It is worth mentioning that a photodiode has its own symbol - on every scheme it will be marked by a triangle with a vertical line and two arrows over the triangle.
